Switch Support
What do they do?
They can be configured either as replacements for existing switches which can form part of a Smart System or you can create soft switches - that is switches which are not physically wired to lamps and yet can control multiple items.
Let's look at an example - if you currently have a single gang switch for some ceiling lights, you could add a 2 or 3 gang Smart Switch, connect the ceiling lights to gang 1 and then configure automations which recognise when buttons 2 or 3 are pressed and recall preset scenes - perhaps you have a TV Scene which turns main lamps off and just turns on table lamps - easy!
Can I replace existing switches?
Yes, in most cases you can replace your existing wired light switch with a smart switch. It doesn't matter whether you have a live and neutral or just a switched live setup as our non hybrid switches do not require a neutral feed
The Hybrid switch does however require a live and neutral feed.
What depth of backbox is required?
You will need a backbox of at least 35mm depth - deeper is better as it makes installation easier - if you can use a 47mm you will find it much easier to install especially if there are a lot of existing cables.
If you don't have this then use a frame to effectively increase the available depth without having to change the backbox.
Do they work on 2 way switched circuits?
Not immediately but 2 way switching can be achieved - you will need to retire one of the switches and replace both switches with Smart units, Next, create routines which detect the state of the lamps you wish to control. and then change the state of secondary switches- for example if SW1 is pressed and is ON, then create an automation which sets SW2 to on - this means that both switches are in the same state.
If you add presence sensors then the need for any switching is reduced and you might well find that you can retire both switches.
