Using an advanced 24 GHz radar technology delivers highly accurate occupancy detection in both residential and commercial environments.

Unlike traditional PIR sensors, mWAVE technology detects both movement and micro-movement, ensuring lighting and automation systems remain active while occupants are working, seated, or otherwise stationary.

This makes mWAVE  particularly well suited to living areas where conventional sensors often switch lighting off prematurely.

Reliable detection where PIR falls short

mWAVE radar can detect presence even when occupants are partially obscured by furniture or partitions, providing far more consistent coverage than conventional PIR devices.

Flexible detection configuration

Installers can fine-tune performance through adjustable settings including:

Integrated light sensing

The sensor includes a built-in ambient light sensor, allowing lighting to respond intelligently to natural daylight levels.

This enables automated lighting strategies such as:

• Switching lights off when daylight is sufficient
• Adjusting brightness based on ambient light
• Triggering lighting only when rooms are occupied and dark enough

Performance

mWAVE uses Zigbee which forms a self-healing mesh network.

Each powered Zigbee device (such as smart plugs or switches) acts as a repeater, allowing signals to pass between devices rather than relying on a single router.

This means:

• Devices can route around obstacles or interference
• Network coverage improves as more devices are added
• A single device failure does not break the network

In contrast, Wi-Fi devices normally rely on direct communication with the router. If signal strength is weak or the router restarts, devices may disconnect.

Reduced dependence on the internet

Zigbee operates as a local protocol within the property, meaning automations such as occupancy-triggered lighting can continue to operate even if the internet connection fails.

Wi-Fi devices, particularly those using cloud services, may lose functionality if the internet connection or manufacturer’s servers become unavailable.

For installers this means:

• Core lighting functions remain operational
• Fewer customer complaints during outages
• Greater system reliability

Installation

The mWAVE sensor is designed for quick installation by a qualified electrician, requiring only the provision of a permanent live AC supply.

Once powered, the device is commissioned through the VIVOE hub, where detection zones, sensitivity and timing parameters can be configured.
